USI is part of new urban knowledge platform

VUB and UAntwerp have launched the Knowledge Platform Diversity, Urbanity & Citizenship, which will be based in Mechelen. The Antwerp Urban Studies Institute will join forces with the Brussels Centre for Urban Studies. The platform will focus on important social issues such as the urban character, superdiversity, radicalisation, and citizenship.

Cecilia Furlan is USI's next visiting scholar

Cecilia Furlan develops urban design and planning strategies for sustainability and circularity, with a particular focal on territories of dispersion and territories in transition under condition of resource scarcity. She currently works at the Department of Urbanism, TU Delft and as guest researcher at the Department of Architecture of KU Leuven. Cecilia will be a USI visiting scholar from January to April 2020.

CityLAB VIII: Sex, Gender and the City

How do the various branches of contemporary urban studies engage with theories and cases developed in gender and sexuality studies or queer studies? The eighth CityLAB summer school is organized in collaboration with the Antwerp Gender and Sexuality Studies Network (A*). It investigates a wide range of critical questions about gendering, sexualizing, and queering urban studies.

The only solution for traffic jams: less mobility

According to transport economist Thierry Vanelslander and urban planner Thomas Vanoutrive, the Oosterweel project will not solve Antwerp's traffic problem unless a road pricing system is put in place. These demands are not new, say urban planner Maarten Van Acker and historian Bruno Blondé: they date back to the 18th century.
