Stad in Debat (City in Debate)

USI joins forces with De Roma and deBuren for a new, four-part series of debates on major urban challenges. The aim is to provide a platform for professionals, experts and citizens to enter into dialogue with each other about the future of the city. The central theme of the first edition on 4 March 2020 is poverty among young people in Antwerp and Rotterdam.

Journal of Landscape Architecture

USI members Greet De Block and Bruno Notteboom, together with Vera Vicenzotti and Lisa Diedrich (SLU, Sweden), edited the JoLA special issue "For whom? Exploring landscape design as a political project". The issue recasts the agenda of landscape design as a decidedly sociopolitical project that articulates the spatial reflections of diverse priorities, agendas and, indeed, actors.

Suburban place-making

Suburbanisation has remained understudied for a long time. Laura May contributes to this research with her Belgian case study, which she will present on 21 February 2020. She examined place-making in the urban periphery of Antwerp during the period 1860-1940, focusing on the role of political economic elites in these processes of (sub)urbanisation. May's PhD research was supervised by USI members Ilja Van Damme and Stijn Oosterlynck.
